Navigating Tax Relief Options in the Aftermath of California's Wildfires: A Quick Guide

CA Wildfire Tax Relief


In the wake of the devastating wildfires that have ravaged California, our hearts go out to all those affected. We stand in solidarity with you during this incredibly challenging time. Tax Relief


Both the IRS and the state of California are providing tax relief to those impacted by the wildfires.


Federal Relief:

To qualify for IRS tax relief, you must live in or own a business in Los Angeles County, or another disaster area declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Key extensions include:


Individuals:

  • Extended to October 15, 2025

    • Tax Return (Form 1040) due April 15, 2025

    • 2024 IRA contributions/HSAs for eligible taxpayers

    • Quarterly estimated payments 2025 Q1-Q3 (Form 1040-ES) due April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2025


Businesses:

  • Extended to October 15, 2025

    • Tax-exempt organizations due on May 15, 2025

    • Partnerships (Form 1065) due on March 17, 2025

    • S-Corporations (Form 1120-S) due March 17, 2025

    • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on January 31, April 30, and July 31, 2025

California State Relief:

The state of California offers similar tax relief as the IRS, with a main difference:

  • PTE elective payments due on March 15 and June 15, 2025

How to Receive Tax Relief:


The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers in the disaster area. However, if you are outside the covered disaster area, you can call the disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request tax relief.
