It's Okay to be Selfish

Have you ever been told that you're being selfish? If you're reading this, I'm almost certain that you've been told that before. I don't know about you but being called that is no fun. It really stings and makes you reflect on whether or not you are selfish. What if I told you that there will come a point in time where being called selfish will no longer affect you.

Of course, you have to use your own discernment when it comes to understanding the definition of selfishness. For purposes of this blog post, I am referring to being selfish with your own time. Often times, we as humans may feel inclined to put the needs of others above our own, even if it's at our own expense. I'm here to tell you today that being selfish with your own time may not warrant a feeling of guilt.

If you're reading this blog post, I'm sure you have some goal in mind that you want to achieve. Whether it's passing the CPA Exam, getting a new promotion at work, or becoming more fit, you will need to take certain steps in order to reach said goal. This is where being selfish comes into play. So, how can you master the art of being selfish with your time during your CPA Exam journey?

1. Prioritize Your Goals

When you decide to take the CPA exam, you’re committing to a goal that demands your full attention. This means prioritizing your study time over other activities. It’s okay to say no to social events, family gatherings, or even extra work assignments. Remember, this is a temporary phase, and the rewards of passing the CPA exam will be worth the sacrifices. Learn to put yourself first.

  1. Limit Distractions

In today’s digital age, distractions are everywhere. From social media notifications to streaming services, it’s easy to get sidetracked. Be selfish with your time by setting boundaries. Turn off notifications, create a dedicated study space, and let others know that you’re not to be disturbed during your study hours. Again, put yourself first. No one is going to pass the CPA Exam for you.

3. Take Care of Yourself

Being selfish with your time also means taking care of your physical and mental well-being. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and taking breaks when needed. A well-rested and healthy mind is more efficient and effective in absorbing information.

4. Communicate Your Needs

Let your friends, family, and colleagues know about your commitment to the CPA exam. Communicate your study schedule and the importance of this goal. Most people will understand and support your need to be selfish with your time during this period. This doesn't mean cut off your communication with your friends, family, and colleagues. It's simply a reminder from you to others letting them know how important passing the CPA Exam is to you.

Conclusion

Being selfish with your time while studying for the CPA exam is not about neglecting others; it’s about prioritizing your goals and setting boundaries to achieve success. Embrace this mindset, and you’ll find yourself more focused, productive, and ultimately, ready to conquer the CPA exam.
